Coastal Skipper
Prior to coming to do the Coastal Skipper course your practical experience on board a yacht should be at least 30 days at sea, 2 days as skipper, 800 nautical miles and 12 night hours.
You should also have completed the Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore theory course, or at least be able to display the same level of knowledge. The course consists of a 5 day preparation week during which your skippering skills will be tested and honed, from being able to pick up moorings under power and sail in all conditions of wind and tide, boat handling in confined areas, being a skilled helmsman, safety procedures, knowledge of the collision regulations, watch keeping, the skills required by a coastal skipper are many and varied, upper most among the priorities is the safety of the yacht and the crew members.
At the end of the 5 days an independent RYA examiner will step aboard and test that you can demonstrate an understanding of these skills. After that you can breathe a deep sigh and get on with some slightly more adventurous cruising. This is a great course if you have been sailing for some time, it consolidates everything you will have learnt by yourself over the years and just give you that extra boost of confidence in your own abilities.
